 A Disappointing Start to the Day! August 31, 2010

I purchased the alarm lamp 8 months ago as a gift for my husband. Up until last weekend it worked perfectly and we loved it - and then late one night we switched it off, were just dropping off to sleep and the trouble started! There was a strange glow, followed by flashing and buzzing, and then an unpleasant smell of overheating! Quite concerning really! We were glad that we were awake enough to deal with it (by quickly unplugging it!), and that we had been at home!
We tested the lamp in other sockets and checked the user guide for any useful tips that may highlight a simple issue, but to no avail. Sadly the lamp is being returned to Amazon as soon as possible and I will be sourcing an alternative product.
The prodcut was good while it lasted, and the service from Amazon was faultless as usual in terms of delivery and returns.

I like the way this wakes me up with a gradual sunrise effect, but the problem is that I tend to wake up when the light first comes on about 15 minutes before the alarm, but if I turn down the brightness, I tend to sleep through it. Also, it's easy enough to roll over or bury my head under the pillow to block out the light. I would also have liked the ability to set the alarm to specific days, although I suppose that's a lot to ask for. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the buttons are really poor. They are basically dials that press in. If I want to turn off the lamp, I have to press the lamp dial in, but when I try to press it, the whole unit moves across the table unless I hold onto it.

I bought this for my daughter but the instructions are not clear; the controls are fiddly; and, unless we're not understanding it properly, needs to be re-set every night which is a bit of a nuisance.
I also though I'd read in the blurb that you could put it on at night and it would gradually dim over a period of time but this doesn't seem to be the case.
Gathering dust now, I'm afraid.

We had this lamp for about 4 months before it developed a fault. For those 4 months (December to April) it was fantastic and it really improved how we woke each morning. The light gradually gets brighter as it gets towards the set alarm time and gradually rouses you. Our chosen alarm was the chirping birds and along with the light it was recreating dawn for us during the dark winter months. I used to really struggle to wake and would press the snooze button on our old alarm clock a few times before actually getting up. If you want to get to sleep gradually then the lamp can be set to slowly dim into darkness.
This clock was brilliant and I would have heartily recommended it - until it broke. One evening we switched it on and it made a loud pop followed by a horrid acrid smell. It may have been the bulb that went, but as that is not user replaceable (it's all sealed up) the whole unit had to go back. Philips were very quick to respond to tell us that, yes, it should be returned and it should be returned via Amazon. Amazon were then very quick to arrange the return. DHL came and took the item away without me having to spend any money on postage. So full marks for the return process.
Unfortunately Amazon were out of their own stock so the only option was for a refund. However, I'm just not sure I would buy a replacement now anyway - it works well when it works but is is reliable enough to risk another go? It's also increased massively in price since I made the original purchase. It's such a shame as I can see the winter months are going to be back to the struggle to wake up and get up!
